How far can better technology, policy and communication take us in the near term?

4 minute read

A workshop and meeting in Canberra on 17-18 June will look at how far new technology and policy can move the dial on healthcare system efficiency, especially if disparate state and federal groups get onboard with opportunities emerging to make the system operate more like it’s one system. Do you want to contribute?

The Towards One Healthcare System Summit and workshop in Canberra on 17 and 18 June is bringing together healthcare leaders and influencers from the states and the federal government to have a hard look at some obvious opportunities for near-term alignment of new technology, policy and existing services to create significant new healthcare system synergies, reflecting a philosophy of one integrated national health system.

The event starts with a Chatham House rules workshop moderated by Nous, one of the key consulting groups across state and federal health initiatives, with participants from state and federal government health departments, hospital networks, PHNs, major system technology platform vendors, primary, allied and specialist health organisations and the odd politician.

If you’d like to come to that workshop, tonight is the last time you can get the early bird discount, and, we are fast approaching the limit of the workshop room capacity (we only have about 25 seats left).

You can see the program for the workshop and summit and buy your tickets HERE.

If you buy your ticket tonight TMR subscribers can access a further 10% discount using the promo code LCS10 and HSD paid subscribers can use their 20% discount by logging into their account prior to booking through our HSD events page HERE.

The Towards One Healthcare System workshop will be moderated by Dr Paul Eleftheriou and Raj Verma from the Nous Group, assisted by input from significant state and federal health managers, in contemplating important evolving system initiatives such as “sharing by default”, the national HIE, new technology platform standards, scope of practice, the rapidly evolving potential of AI and of regional health service commissioning.

The workshop will deep dive on three themes:

  • Any opportunity in the near term for funding and governance changes that might help grease the wheels of systemic change – things like joint needs assessments in regions by hospitals in co-operation with local PHNs, the state and future of co-commissioning, off-grid opportunities for hospitals to work much more tightly with their local GP and allied health networks, particularly in rural and remote, and more;
  • Practical alignment of initiatives on workforce including making the most of scope of practice, innovative new care models such as virtual hospital services, creative integration of workforce in rural and remote communities, and the opportunity for AI to significantly reduce administrative burden at many levels of healthcare provider provision;
  • The significant implications of technology changes, especially in terms of the near-term potential for major improvements to connectivity between providers, in particular, GPs and allied health and hospitals. The discussion will include high-level system-enabling infrastructure being built out by the federal government and the ADHA such as a more agile My Health Record, a national HIE and Provider Connect Australia, plus a myriad of new web-based technologies that are emerging as a result of the government’s push to make most of our underlying system platforms cloud enabled – things like new e-referral solutions (we will be talking about some very interesting early installations), the enabling of our major PMS platforms to share data via the cloud, innovative new care models enabled by cloud vendors, and of course the opportunity at all levels for AI.

Although the workshop will be Chatham House rules, Nous and Health Services Daily will be developing a white paper which distils input from workshop participants on all these system enablers and provides a form of roadmap for state and federal system planners to optimise their planning in the near term.

The workshop will also create the basis for discussions in the broader summit to be held the following day.

Towards One Healthcare System Summit is taking place at QT Canberra on 17 and 18 June 2025, in partnership with the AIDH, Nous Group and Healthdirect.
