MediSecure now in the hands of liquidators

It’s another hammer blow for the digital script delivery company following their recent data breach.

MediSecure has been placed in the hands of voluntary administrators in the latest of a series of hammer blows for the company.

Vaughan Strawbridge and Paul Harlong of FTI Consulting have been appointed as administrators of MediSecure Limited as of 3 June, and as liquidators of the company as of 4 June.

Until late 2023, MediSecure was a national prescription delivery service provider which enabled prescriptions to be delivered from prescribers to a pharmacy of an individual’s choice. A data breach in mid-May resulted in compromised personal information and “limited health information” relating to prescriptions, as well as the personal information of healthcare providers.

As late as Monday of this week, MediSecure was denying it had approached the federal government for a financial bailout in the wake of a large-scale cyberattack that has impacted patients and healthcare professionals.

Data from the cyberattack has been made available for sale on the dark web. It is understood a Russian hacking forum was behind the bid to sell 6.5 terabytes of stolen MediSecure data for US$50,000.

Yesterday control of the company passed to the liquidators.

“We recognise the significant concern and the impact of the recent cyber incident,” said Mr Strawbridge in a statement.

‘Unwelcome development’: Aussie cyber boss update on MediSecure

“The company has been in contact with the Australian government with respect to providing information in response to that incident.

“Our role as administrators and liquidators includes investigating the affairs of the company to identify reasons for its failure, and to examine options that may be available to recover assets for the benefit of creditors of the companies.

“We will be speaking to the Australian government about what they need from the company and the next steps in the response to the cyber incident.”

A first meeting of creditors of MediSecure Limited will be held in mid-June, according to the administrators.
