Testing testing: AI scribes in general practice

1 minute read

A PHN has waded in to see if it works. They’ll get back to you.

Phase one of a pilot to test an AI-powered scribe, “ambient scribe technology”, in general practice will run across 14 sites across the Hunter New England and Central Coast PHN.

The AI-Enabled General Practice Initiative was launched by the PHN this week.

It will look at how the AI scribe can be used to automate documentation, improve operational efficiency, and reduce administrative tasks for clinicians.

Ambient artificial intelligence scribes “listen” to conversations in real time through a microphone (as on a phone) but don’t keep a recording of the conversation. They can be used to make clinical notes and other kinds of documentation, interact with records and other practice software.

“This initiative ultimately aims to establish a scalable framework for adoption of AI Scribing in general practice, supporting long-term sustainability and viability across the region,” said HNECC PHN chief executive officer Richard Nankervis.

“The selected practices will lead the way by sharing their experiences with other practices, showcasing the value of AI scribing, and serving as beacons of innovation. This initiative underscores the transformative potential of AI in healthcare.”
