Townsville HHS reviewing security guard attack

The health service says it will await a review into the incident before implementing any ‘additional or alternative security measures’.

Townsville Hospital and Health Service has launched a review into the stabbing of a security officer outside Townsville University Hospital late last month.

According to a statement issued by THHS CEO Kieran Keyes, the 42-year-old officer injured in the attack had received medical treatment and been given “access to ongoing support”.

“A staff member was injured at Townsville University Hospital during an incident involving a patient at about 1:30am on Tuesday 25 June,” Mr Keyes said.

“The patient was experiencing a medical episode at the time.

“This was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing risk to patients or staff.”

Mr Keyes said initial findings from the ongoing review into the incident were on track to be shared with the health service within the next few weeks.

“I want to reassure the community that the safety and welfare of our patients and our staff is always our top priority,” he said.

“A review into the incident is still underway with a draft report expected to be finalised for the health service’s consideration this month.

“It is important we let this process run its course and do not try to predetermine the outcomes.

“The findings of the review will determine if additional or alternative security measures are required.

“I cannot comment on the matter further due to our commitment to confidentiality.”
